There was no particular image in my mind when I started this painting. I was simply drawn to the contrast between soft pinks and lilacs and the much stronger blues, reds and turquoise that began appearing underneath and across the surface.
As the painting developed, it became a conversation between opposing forces — quiet and noisy, delicate and strong, calm and restless. I liked the way some marks almost disappear into the layers while others insist on being seen.
I worked intuitively, building and scraping back the paint, adding pencil lines and using sgraffito to scratch into the surface. Those little interruptions became just as important as the painted areas, giving the work a sense of movement and tension.
The finished piece feels to me like that moment when something is about to happen — not necessarily something dramatic, just an energy you can feel before you know where it's going.
